The birth of a Coronal Hole

In the following video is shown the birth of a Coronal Hole during a X5.4-class solar flare occurred on March 7, 2012 at 00.02 UTC.

Close to the eruption – on the AR1429 – can be noticed the unsettled solar plasma and a darker area: it’s the new Coronal Hole. In the next few days the wind stream flowing from this coronal hole will reach Earth and affect our Geomagnetic Field. Video credits: courtesy of NASA/SDO and the AIA, EVE, and HMI science teams.
